First and foremost, the best way to protect and preserve your silver pieces is to control the three most damaging elements that is light, humidity and heat.

Make sure that you handle the silver showpiece with care. The oils and acids from skin causes erosion. Thus, to be safe wear clean cotton gloves while handling it.

The showpieces should be displayed in a proper manner. If it is to be hanged then make sure it is secured with sturdy hardware. Or if the showpiece is to be displayed then it should rest firmly on level surfaces.

Take note that you gently hand wash the silver with unscented phosphate free detergent. While washing, do not allow silver to come in contact with a metal sink that may cause scratching.

Rather than going for chemical dips or a machine can dull or damage the finish of the showpiece. Hand polishing is the best option. So, firstly put on a pair of cotton gloves as fingerprints can cause more tarnishing of the silver. Then rub a low ammonia liquid with cotton balls or a sponge. After which rinse it with warm water making sure than nothing is left anywhere near the crevices and finally dry it with soft cotton cloth.

Silver surely improves with age and develops a lush patina, if it is maintained properly.
